Let’s sit on the Edge

A poem written for my father.

Let’s sit on the edge

And dangle our feet

Let’s go to a place

Where two minds meet

How nice it would be

To talk without caution

To speak about lives long forgotten

To talk of our ancestors, the land and the history

The things that went before that seem a mystery

All I want is your company, your laughter, your time

You tell me about your day, I’ll tell you about mine.

Let’s sit on the edge

And with voices full of calm

Talk about the world, nature and the beauty all around

Let’s look at the birds, the mountains, the hills

The clouds, the forests, the valleys, the streams

Let’s marvel at landscapes and days full of promise.

The joy that is life and all that it brings

Let’s live it again and begin from the start

Let’s forget all the failings and appreciate the art

With gazes wide open and feet on the floor

Let’s think of the present and all that lies before.

Let’s sit on the edge

And with a heart spilling over

Let go of the pain, the guilt and the hurt

Send them off, chase them on, free ourselves of the plight

And enjoy what is left of this glorious life

Only speak of the good, the loving, the true

Because nothing really matters except me and you

We only have now and the time gone is long spent

Let’s not mess it up, let’s not relent

Say yes to the magic, the joy and the pleasure

Feel the grass on our toes and take in the sky without measure

Old times can’t be changed but those still to be had

Are here for the taking so lets stop feeling sad.

Let’s sit on the edge

And with a smile full of wonder

Tell stories of childhood, delinquents and youth

Or pop in for a flyby and bring us a fish

Discuss the weather, the seasons, your favourite dish

Be part of the flurry, the mayhem, the love

Be a part of the memories, the celebrations, the chaos

Be here, be present, and love who we are

Bring us the paper that you would never choose

Talk about the team you are willing to lose

Cuddle the children, push away the dogs

Discuss the forecast and watch us with glee

We are different to you and live our lives openly

We are happy and lovely and blessed full of good

Watch us grow and progress and live the life that we should.

I will wait for you on the edge with my dangling feet

I will wait for you at the place where two minds meet.

It all had its place

It all had to be done

To teach us the lesson we are all one

Connected in spirit until the end of time

I hope you will always hold me in your soul

As I will always hold you in mine.

All my love

Lou
